Dark rooms that fill up for each screening: what is looked at in the ducts of a cinema
A cinema room spends hours empty and then fills up all at once, and it almost always hangs from a system serving several rooms at the same time.
Duct cleaning in a cinema is the camera inspection and cleaning of the air conditioning ducts serving each screening room, the lobby and the projection area, scheduled between screenings. It is checked which unit serves each room, and what was observed is delivered room by room, with the areas without access noted.
What sets cinemas apart
Facts that help decide in cinemas
- In Panama: The INEC Business and Establishment Directory (reference year 2022) groups in one class the screening of films in cinemas and the post-production activities of films and television programs: 23 companies with 631 people employed. (INEC, Business and Establishment Directory 2022, table 12)
- Technical fact: The EPA and NIOSH guide says to confirm that operating cycles match the actual occupied periods, and that in hot, humid climates ventilation may be needed during long unoccupied periods to prevent mold growth. (EPA and NIOSH, Building Air Quality, section 5)
- Peer-reviewed study: A study of 82 events in seven mechanically ventilated auditoria found good air quality overall, but in some auditoria it saw variation between zones of the room, a sign of poor air mixing. It was carried out in UK theaters, not in cinemas. (Adzic et al., Building and Environment, 2022)
Types of place within cinemas
| Type of place | What changes in the work plan |
|---|---|
| Cinemas | Ducts of each room and its fresh air supply, with one report per room |
| Theaters and auditoriums | The main room and the support areas behind the stage are looked at |
| University auditoriums | The work follows the academic calendar and the scheduled events |
| Convention centers | Large rooms that change layout, and the event calendar sets when to enter |
| Event halls | Highly variable occupancy, with a review between one event and the next |
| Conference rooms | Returns of the room and the corridors around it, before a large meeting |
How the work is organized in cinemas
- Know which unit serves each room. The starting point is a map of units, rooms, lobby and projection before the ducts are run through.
- Schedule between screenings. The rooms are worked one at a time, in the hours with no screening that management agrees.
- Hand over the condition room by room. Each room receives its photos and its note, and the areas without access are noted.

Frequently asked questions
Does the cinema have to close?
The rooms are worked one at a time, in hours with no screening. The others keep projecting, if management so decides.
Is the projection booth reviewed?
Only the air conditioning ducts serving it. The projection equipment belongs to the cinema and is not touched.
What changes in a cinema inside a shopping center?
First it is checked whether the room air depends on the center’s system or on its own units, and the work is coordinated with the center management and the cinema management.
Why does humidity matter between screenings?
With the equipment stopped in a humid climate, moisture can stay on grilles and pans. The camera shows whether that happens and in which room.
How often does it make sense to check the ducts in cinemas?
There is no fixed frequency. It makes sense to look when a room has odors or moisture on the grilles, after periods with the cinema closed or with few screenings, or after changes to the rooms.
What does the report include for cinemas?
It brings photographs of the inside of the ducts. It is organized by room, with the lobby and the projection area separate, and marks the areas without access.
