Casino open 24 hours: checking the ducts without closing the floor

A casino has no closing time and no low season. The duct check is designed for a floor that always has people on it, not one that empties.

Short answer

A casino that never closes is checked by floor sections, never all at once. The floor is divided into slot and table zones according to the duct branches that serve them, one zone is worked per shift in the lowest occupancy window, the return of that zone is isolated and every access is coordinated with security and surveillance. The result is measured with photos per section and with the floor in operation.

Why the casino cannot use a hotel calendar

In a hotel the work goes floor by floor with empty rooms, and management can block off a wing for two days. In a casino the floor is one space, it is occupied at any hour and every square meter earns. Closing a slot zone for a whole day does not get approved, and the floor has no season where it drops to zero. ASHRAE Standard 180 defines inspection tasks per component and does not require the building to be empty, which suits this operation.

What a casino does have is a very marked occupancy curve. Between four and nine in the morning the floor drops to a fraction of its capacity, and that is what replaces closing. Planning is done on that window, not on a day.

Sectioning the gaming floor to work in shifts

The first step is not technical but drawing based. The duct drawing is taken and each branch is marked with the group of slots and the group of tables it serves. Each branch with its return becomes a work sector. A medium sized casino usually ends up split into six to ten sectors, and each one is handled in an early morning window without touching the rest.

To coordinate a visit related to casinos, Climatiza answers inquiries and confirms availability according to the schedule of the place.

SectorHow it is isolatedWhat is closed to the public
Slot bank served by one branchThe branch return is blocked and the open section is coveredOnly the slots under the open section, for two or three hours
Table areaWork happens when the tables in that area are closed by shiftNothing extra: the tables were already closed
VIP room or private loungeScheduled with management as if it were a hotel floorThe whole room, one early morning
Air handler roomTechnical access, no publicNothing

The EPA and NIOSH Building Air Quality guide recommends, for work in occupied buildings, blocking the return registers of the work zone so that what gets stirred up does not recirculate to the rest. In a casino that blocking is what allows the neighboring sector to keep operating while the next branch is cleaned.

Coordination with security and surveillance

A contractor in the ceiling space of a casino is, for surveillance, a person with access to the area above the cameras and the tables. That is why the work does not start with the technician but with the head of security.

  • Named list of the crew with identity documents, sent in advance and with no last minute changes.
  • Prior walk through with security to mark which ceiling panels sit above tables, cages or the count room.
  • Security escort for the whole work window, assigned by the casino.
  • Tools and equipment counted on the way in and on the way out.
  • Notice to surveillance of which cameras will be momentarily covered by the protective plastic.
  • Log of each ceiling opening with time, sector and person, signed by the escort.

These points are agreed once and repeated for each sector. In the hotels and hostels page it is explained how the work is ordered when the casino is part of a hotel and shares air handlers with the lobby.

What to check in slot halls and table areas

  1. Low returns next to the slot banks. Many floors have returns at mid height or in the skirting. They take in carpet lint, ticket paper and dust from the slot machine fans. It is the most loaded section of a casino.
  2. Diffusers above the tables. They must blow without lifting chips or cards. A diffuser with dirty louvers changes the air pattern and dealers notice before anyone else.
  3. Air handler filters. With continuous operation, the filter never gets hours off. Pressure drop is logged and the filter is changed by data, not by date.
  4. Sections above smoking areas. Where smoking is allowed, the return of that zone is checked separately and more often, because the smoke film changes the cleaning method.

To know what gets photographed and how a section without access is documented, there is the description of the camera inspection. Nightclubs share night occupancy with casinos, but their fog and dance floor logic is different and is covered in the nightclubs and casinos page.

How to measure the result with the floor in operation

Without closing there is no before and after for the whole building. What there is, is a before and after per sector, and that is what gets compared. The NADCA ACR standard describes visual verification after cleaning and serves as a reference so the report says clean with the same criterion across all ten sectors.

  • Photo of the inside of each return before and after, from the same point, with the sector number visible.
  • Filter pressure drop reading before and after the change, per air handler.
  • Log of dealer and customer complaints per sector during the month before and after.
  • List of ceiling panels opened, with time and sector, cross checked with the security log.
  • Sections without access by security decision, marked on the drawing for the next round.

With that record, management decides the next round sector by sector, instead of a full cleaning every so often. The general criteria for deciding whether a section is cleaned or left alone are in when to clean the ducts and how it should be done, and the usual sequence of a job is in the duct cleaning service page.

To ask about availability or request a camera inspection, the Climatiza website lists the ways to contact the team and the duct cleaning service page explains how the work is organized.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on the number of sectors that come out of the duct drawing. A medium sized casino with eight sectors is inspected in eight early morning windows, one per sector, without the floor closing at any point. Cleaning, if needed, is added afterwards sector by sector.

Only those under the open ceiling section, and they are covered with plastic. The rest of the bank keeps operating. Security decides whether a machine with money inside is switched off or locked.

If the smoking area shares a return with the main floor, yes. The camera inspection shows whether that return is connected to the same branch, and the report flags it so the HVAC technician can evaluate separating it.

They are recorded in the report as not checked, with the reason. A report that says what was not seen is better than one that calls clean a zone nobody opened. Access is requested again in the next round.
