Casino open 24 hours: checking the ducts without closing the floor

In a casino, stopping the floor for a whole day means losing a day of revenue. Air maintenance has to find its gap without the floor noticing.

Short answer

A casino that does not close is reviewed by floor sectors and never all at once. The floor is divided into machine and table zones according to the branches that serve them, one zone is worked per shift in the lowest occupancy window, that zone’s return is isolated and every access is coordinated with security and surveillance. The result is measured with photos per sector, with the floor in operation.

For a casino operations manager, air conditioning is one of those things that only get noticed when they fail. In a hall with hundreds of machines running and people all night, any lapse is felt: a bank of slot machines that heats up, a table where the dealer asks to lower the temperature, a corner where the air arrives with an odd smell. And every time someone proposes checking the ducts, the answer from the commercial area is the same: the floor cannot be closed.

The commercial area is right, and that is why the problem is posed the other way round. The question is not when to close, but how to divide the floor so that no part has to close entirely. The method exists and is similar to any continuous operation: work is done by sectors, in the quietest window, with the rest of the floor running and with security alongside.

Why can the casino not use a hotel calendar?

Because a hotel works floor by floor with empty rooms and can block a wing for two days, while a casino has a single hall, occupied at any hour, where every square meter produces. Closing a machine zone for a whole day is not approved, and the hall has no season in which it drops to zero. What it does have is a very marked occupancy curve: in the early morning the hall falls to a fraction of its capacity, and that is what replaces closing.

To coordinate a visit related to casinos, Climatiza answers inquiries and confirms availability according to the schedule of the place.

The ASHRAE 180 standard defines inspection tasks per component and does not require the building to be empty, which fits this operation. Planning is done on the lowest occupancy window and not on a day, and that difference changes the whole calendar.

How is the gaming floor divided to work by shifts?

The first step is not technical, it is about the floor plan. The duct plan is taken and it is marked which branch serves each group of machines and each group of tables. Each branch with its return becomes a work sector. A mid sized casino usually ends up divided into several sectors, and each is handled in an early morning window without touching the rest. The EPA and NIOSH guidance for work in occupied buildings recommends blocking the return openings of the work zone so that what is stirred up does not recirculate to the rest, and in a casino that blocking is what lets the neighboring sector keep operating while the next branch is cleaned.

Floor zoneHow it is workedWhat is affected

Table areaWorked when that zone’s tables are closed for the shiftNothing additional

What needs to be coordinated with security and surveillance?

A contractor in a casino ceiling is, for surveillance, a person with access to the area above the cameras and the tables. That is why the work does not start with the technician but with the head of security. The named list of the team with identity documents is sent in advance, with no last minute changes, and a prior walk is made to mark which ceiling access points sit above tables, cash desks or the counting room. A security escort assigned by the casino stays through the whole window.

Tools and equipment are counted on entry and exit, surveillance is told which cameras will be momentarily covered by the protective plastic, and each ceiling opening is logged with time, sector and person, signed by the escort. These points are agreed once and repeated in each sector, so that by the second and third early morning it is already routine.

Why does it matter if the floor keeps producing?

It matters for the comfort of a hall where people spend hours, and because a bank of machines with low airflow heats up and fails sooner. It matters for the equipment, which in a continuous operation has no rest hours: the air handlers and filters run without pause and wear accumulates faster. It matters for the working environment of dealers and floor staff, who are the first to notice a badly distributed diffuser. And it matters for order: a record per sector makes it possible to justify the spending to management and answer any audit without rebuilding anything.

A study of 97 office buildings from the EPA BASE study linked a lower frequency of cleaning coils and drain pans with more symptoms such as headache and eye complaints, though it was an association and not a demonstrated cause. A practical priority follows for a continuous hall: coils, pans and filters first, ducts afterward. It is also worth remembering that the EPA and the CDC have not found that cleaning ducts prevents health problems, so cleaning is proposed for the condition of the system and not as protection.

The low returns beside the machine banks are the most loaded section, because they receive carpet lint, ticket paper and dust from the machines’ fans. The diffusers above the tables must blow without lifting chips or cards, and dealers notice before anyone else when dirty slats change the air pattern. In the air handlers, the filter has no rest hours, so the pressure drop is logged and it is changed by data and not by date. And where smoking is allowed, the return of that zone is reviewed separately and more often, because the smoke film changes the cleaning method.

An illustrative case, not a real client: a casino with eight sectors. On a first early morning two are inspected, with the return blocked and security present. The camera shows the low return loaded with lint in one and a saturated filter in the other. The filter is changed, the first section of the return is cleaned and the remaining sectors are noted in the calendar for the following weeks. At no point did the floor close.

How is the result measured with the floor in operation?

Without closing there is no before and after for the whole building, there is a before and after per sector, and that is what is compared. The NADCA ACR standard describes visual verification after cleaning and serves as a reference so that the report says clean with the same criterion in all sectors. The file gathers the photo of the inside of each return before and after, from the same point and with the sector number visible, the filter pressure drop reading per air handler, the log of complaints from dealers and customers per sector for the month before and after, and the list of sections left without access by security decision.

With that record, management decides the next round sector by sector instead of a complete cleaning every so often. To know what is photographed and how a section without access is documented, there is the description of the camera inspection. The usual sequence of a job is told in the duct cleaning service.

Which mistakes repeat and what is worth asking for?

The error of wanting to work the whole floor in a single early morning is repeated, which forces a compromise on quality. So is not blocking the sector return, so that what is stirred up recirculates, and treating security as a formality at the end. It is worth asking for a sector plan with a map, the calendar of windows, the commitment to blocking and protection, the signed log of openings and a report per sector with the same shots before and after. In how the work is ordered in a hotel with a casino the logic is explained when the casino shares air handlers with the lobby, and in high capacity night venues the difference from an operation where smoke and the dance floor dominate. The overview of places served is in the sectors.

Why does inspecting and cleaning ducts matter?

These are the technical reasons, with their source, why the condition of the ducts is checked before deciding. Duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems according to the EPA and the CDC, and it is proposed only when the observed condition justifies it.

AdvantageData with sourceWhat it means in practice
Protect equipment performanceIn a laboratory test with dust equivalent to one year of use, coil pressure drop rose between 6 and 30 % and efficiency (EER) fell between 1 and 9 % (Yang, Braun and Groll, ARTI, 2004).It is a laboratory result and not a promise of savings: it points to the components worth checking.
Keep humidity under controlThe EPA recommends in its guide to mold and moisture keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 % and drain pans clean and draining freely.A humidity reading and a clean pan limit the conditions in which mold grows.
Require method and a report from the providerNADCA published in 2025 the current edition of its ACR standard on assessment, cleaning and restoration of air systems. It is an industry reference and not a seal: it helps ask for method, photographs and scope in writing.
A local figure that changes the decisionThe Panama Tourism Authority has 1,419 registered lodging establishments with 39,276 rooms. Hotels account for 354 with 27,112 rooms, and hostels for 513 with 2,798. Panamá province holds 20,818 rooms, or 53.0%. Yes. It is divided into sectors according to the duct branches, one is worked per shift in the lowest occupancy window and that sector’s return is blocked. The rest of the floor keeps operating with security present.

A security escort assigned by the casino during the whole window. That person signs the log of each ceiling opening, with time, sector and person, and the equipment and tools are counted on entry and exit.

With photos of the inside of the return before and after, from the same point and with the sector number visible, plus the filter pressure drop reading. Each sector is compared with itself.

The casino’s security and surveillance staff, who log the entry, verify credentials and mark the authorized zones. That person stays with the technician in every sector. Cashier, counting and control rooms are not included without express written authorization from management.

With a floor plan divided into sectors, one photo per grille or branch and a status for each sector: reviewed, pending or not authorized. That table makes it possible to resume the next night without repeating zones and gives management a complete picture of the whole floor.
