Television studio: ducts, air noise and lighting heat

In a studio the air conditioning cannot be switched off because the lights heat the space, and it cannot be heard because the microphone picks up everything. That tension defines the job.

Short answer

Duct noise in a television studio is usually of two types: flow whistle at diffusers, dampers or reduced sections, and mechanical vibration of panels, filters or joints. They are separated with a silent test. The check is scheduled between recordings, the camera shows dust or loose parts and the fine adjustment is made by the air conditioning technician.

The technical head of a studio knows the scene: the shot is ready, the director asks for silence and a hiss shows up in the audio that was not there in rehearsal. Someone proposes switching off the air for a moment. Two minutes later the presenters are sweating under the lights and the makeup runs. A studio’s air conditioning lives in that contradiction every day.

The aim of this article is to separate the noise sources, to show which part belongs to the duct and how it is checked without interrupting production. How work is organized in spaces with so many devices and schedules is explained in how the job is organized in a contact center or equipment-heavy studio, and the context of production offices is in how the work goes in an office.

Where does the noise from the air come from?

It comes in two families. The first is flow noise: air whistles when it passes through a small opening at high speed, and that opening can be a diffuser with its vanes almost closed, a damper half open or a section where dust has reduced the free area. The second is mechanical noise: a damper with a loose shaft, an unreinforced panel that drums, a poorly seated filter that knocks against its frame or the unit’s vibration carried by a rigid duct without a flexible joint.

To coordinate a visit related to tV studios, Climatiza answers inquiries and confirms availability according to the schedule of the place.

A paper published in Applied Acoustics in 2018 explains that in-duct elements such as elbows, dampers or branches generate turbulence and some of that energy is converted into noise, and that solving it after the system is installed is very hard. It is a useful warning: nearly all flow noise is born in the geometry, and what can be done is to verify that nothing makes it worse, such as accumulated dust or a badly positioned damper.

Why does the heat of the lights matter?

A lit set concentrates heat in a few square meters, under a grid of lights and with people who cannot sweat on camera. To compensate, the system works at high airflow, and at high airflow everything sounds louder: diffusers whistle, panels vibrate and the fan hums. If the filter or the coil is also loaded, the unit pushes against more resistance and the noise rises without the temperature falling. With LED lights the heat is lower, but the airflow remains high because of occupancy and electronic equipment.

That is why it matters. For production, air that can be heard costs retakes and editing time. For technical management, a badly tuned system strains the equipment, spends more and ages sooner. And for the studio owner, having a dated record of the state of the ducts helps in discussions with the installer or the landlord with evidence. On cleaning, the EPA and the CDC state that it has not been shown to prevent health problems, so it is proposed only when the camera shows residue that reduces the section or affects the equipment.

How is the noise located without switching off the air during recording?

  1. Silent test.. In a gap between recordings, with the studio silent, each diffuser is listened to and those that sound are noted.
  2. Change one variable.. The vanes of a diffuser are moved or the fan speed is lowered. If the noise changes, it is flow. If it stays the same or comes at intervals, it is mechanical.
  3. Camera in the branch.. The camera is run through the branch of the noisy diffuser to see dust, loose insulation or an object left behind in a set remodel.
  4. Adjustment by the air conditioning technician.. Dampers, fan speed and flexible joints are corrected with whoever knows the system balance.

The camera inspection makes almost no noise, but any cleaning does, so it is scheduled outside recording. The ASHRAE 180 standard for inspection and maintenance of commercial systems rests on the same idea: check regularly and document in order to decide with evidence. The survey method is in how a camera inspection is carried out.

What does it look like in a concrete case?

An illustrative case, not a real client: a studio where the microphone picks up a hiss in the corner of the news set. The silent test places the source at a diffuser whose vanes are almost closed because of an adjustment made months earlier. When they are opened, the whistle drops and the set temperature holds. The camera also shows bonded dust in the first section of the branch, reducing its area. The decision is to leave the diffuser in its right position, clean that section outside recording and check again with the same test. Cleaning the whole system would not have fixed the cause.

Which mistakes keep repeating?

The first is switching off the air during recording as a solution, which moves the problem to heat. The second is closing diffusers to reduce noise, which makes it worse by raising the speed at the opening. The third is cleaning blindly without knowing whether the noise is flow or mechanical. The fourth is not recording what was changed, so nobody knows whether today’s hiss is the same as a month ago.

What is worth asking the provider for?

  • A work route that respects recording and rehearsal schedules.
  • A list of noisy diffusers, classified as flow or mechanical.
  • Images of the branch of each diffuser reviewed.
  • A note for the air conditioning technician on dampers and speed.

Why does inspecting and cleaning ducts matter?

These are the technical reasons, with their source, why the condition of the ducts is checked before deciding. Duct cleaning has not been shown to prevent health problems according to the EPA and the CDC, and it is proposed only when the observed condition justifies it.

AdvantageData with sourceWhat it means in practice
Protect equipment performanceIn a laboratory test with dust equivalent to one year of use, coil pressure drop rose between 6 and 30 % and efficiency (EER) fell between 1 and 9 % (Yang, Braun and Groll, ARTI, 2004).It is a laboratory result and not a promise of savings: it points to the components worth checking.
Keep humidity under controlThe EPA recommends in its guide to mold and moisture keeping indoor relative humidity below 60 % and drain pans clean and draining freely.A humidity reading and a clean pan limit the conditions in which mold grows.
Require method and a report from the providerNADCA published in 2025 the current edition of its ACR standard on assessment, cleaning and restoration of air systems. It is an industry reference and not a seal: it helps ask for method, photographs and scope in writing.
Keep construction dust out of the systemThe EPA and NIOSH Building Air Quality guide asks to block return grilles while construction work takes place in occupied buildings. Before accepting a new or remodeled system it is worth checking whether construction dust got in.
A local figure that changes the decisionAccording to ASEP, cited by La Prensa on February 13, 2016, 92 concessions had been granted for call center services and 42 were operating. People employed in the activity went from 12,643 in 2012 to 8,500 the year before the article. These are figures from that date and not current ones. (La Prensa, Call center industry loses strength (2016)).It is the sector context taken into account when planning the visit.

Frequently asked questions

Only if the cause is dust that reduces the section or a loose part the camera finds. Almost always the origin is a damper, a badly positioned diffuser or a joint, and the adjustment is made by the air conditioning technician.

The silent test is done in a gap between recordings and the camera makes almost no noise. Cleanings are scheduled outside recording and rehearsal, in agreement with the technical head.

Usually it makes it worse, because air passes through a smaller opening at higher speed. It is better to open it or balance the system with the air conditioning technician, and verify with the silent test.

The ASHRAE 180 standard treats inspection and maintenance of commercial systems as tasks that are recorded. In a studio, a sheet per unit with date, photos of filter and dampers, and a plan with each diffuser marked as quiet, corrected or pending is useful. That way a new noise is compared with the earlier condition.

Yes. A listening test is done with the set silent and, if engineering asks, a sound level meter is used at the same spot before and after. The result is noted per diffuser. That separates what improved by adjusting vanes or changing a filter from what requires opening the branch.
