In a salon or spa the air shares the room with products, dryers and steam: how its ducts are checked

A salon or spa combines open work stations and closed treatment rooms, and each one calls for looking at the air with a different criterion.

Short answer

Duct cleaning in a beauty salon or spa is the camera inspection and cleaning of the inside of the air conditioning ducts serving the work stations and treatment rooms. It is scheduled between appointments and cleaning is done only where the camera shows it is needed. Extractors and steam equipment are handled separately.

What sets beauty salons and spas apart

Scented products in the roomHairsprays, dyes and polishes leave odors that the air conditioning spreads around the premises. The camera shows the inside of the ducts and records what is there.
Closed treatment rooms with steamIn a spa each treatment room may have its own branch. It is checked which ones share a duct and where moisture builds up.
An appointment book that does not moveAppointments set the pace of the day. The work is scheduled between shifts or on the lightest day of the book, so no client has to be cancelled.

Facts that help decide in beauty salons and spas

  • In Panama: The Ministry of Health guide for beauty salons and barbershops (August 2020) asked that workplaces be kept ventilated, without sudden drafts, and that air conditioning receive proper maintenance, with more frequent filter cleaning. It was written for post COVID-19 operations. (MINSA, Guide of health measures for beauty salons and barbershops (2020))
  • Technical fact: s2OSHA’s page on nail salons says that, if the salon has no exhaust system, the air conditioning should stay on during work, with the thermostat fan switch in the “on” position. It adds that the owner should have a contractor clean the system and replace the filters at least once a year. (s2OSHA, Health Hazards in Nail Salons: Chemical Hazards)

How the work is organized in beauty salons and spas

  1. Know the appointment book. The appointment book is requested to choose a day or slot with few appointments.
  2. Look station by station. The camera checks the grilles and returns of each station and each treatment room.
  3. Leave a record. The report separates what was cleaned, what is monitored and what was left unreviewed.

An example of what the report brings

An illustrative page from a spa report: treatment room 3, inner wing. A photo of the supply grille, a photo of the branch seen with the camera showing a thin layer of dust, and one decision line: clean the branch at the next visit or monitor it until the next report.

What you are left with at the end

  • A report with photos by station or treatment room
  • A note on the condition of the filters of each unit
  • The list of areas that were not reviewed, with the reason
  • A suggestion of when to look again, based on dryer and steam use
