Evidence
Scientific evidence on air conditioning duct cleaning
The literature is more nuanced than the sector’s usual pitch. This page gathers what was measured, what is not proven and what should not be promised.
A reference review in Indoor Air (Zuraimi, 2010) concluded that the evidence is insufficient to claim benefits of duct cleaning for air quality, health, savings or system performance, and the EPA states that it has never been shown to prevent health problems. What has been measured: it reduces duct dust, it can raise particles and bioaerosols during the work if uncontrolled, and its effect on fan energy ranges from -5.1% to +45.5% depending on the case.
What the EPA and the reference review say
The EPA guide on duct cleaning (updated February 19, 2026) says it does not recommend cleaning ducts routinely but only when needed, and that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems. The review by Zuraimi (Indoor Air, 2010) reaches a compatible conclusion: there is evidence that ducts can become contaminated and act as a reservoir, but no field study has correlated poor indoor air quality with duct contamination, and the evidence is insufficient to support benefits for air quality, health, savings or performance. E-02 E-01
That does not mean keeping the system clean is pointless. It means the right question is not “how often is it cleaned?” but “is there a technical reason to clean this system now?”. The reasons are in when to clean ducts and how it should be done.
What was measured when cleaning
| Intervention and setting | Result | Grade | Ref. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overall review: does duct cleaning improve air quality, health or energy use? | Insufficient evidence | Against | E-01 |
| Three cleaning procedures (contact vacuuming, air sweep, rotary brush) in 8 homes | Particles and bioaerosols higher during cleaning than before or after; bioaerosols two days later below the prior level | Moderate | E-08 |
| High-pressure washing of the internal parts of 17 household mini-split units (ductless) | Fungal load reduced by more than 99% | Moderate | E-14 |
| Duct replacement and cleaning of contaminated surfaces in a coastal healthcare facility in a semitropical climate | Aspergillus/Penicillium at the supply register: from 151 to under 1 fs/m³; Cladosporium: from 84 to under 1 fs/m³ | Moderate (single case) | E-16 |
| Follow-up one year after washing those 17 units | Fungal load returned to pre-washing levels | Moderate (pilot study) | E-15 |
Fs/m³: fungal structures per cubic meter of air. Studies on household mini-split units are included as a reference for cleaning internal components, not as proof about ducts.
Three lessons from those data
Energy and airflow: why nobody should promise a percentage
| Study and method | Result | Grade | Ref. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-scale laboratory test: change in fan energy when cleaning filters and ducts | -5.1% to +10.8% | Moderate | E-18 |
| The same test, including the effect of duct leakage | -5.1% to +45.5% | Moderate | E-18 |
| Overall review: is there evidence that cleaning improves airflow and reduces consumption? | Inadequate evidence | Against | E-01 |
| Typical coil fouling (a study focused on residential equipment) | Efficiency and capacity loss under 5%; much larger in marginal systems or extreme conditions | Moderate | D-04 |
The laboratory range is so wide because the result depends on the system’s condition and its leaks. That is why the specific case is estimated, not an average.
The honest conclusion is twofold. First, no study allows promising a fixed percentage of savings from cleaning ducts. Second, that wide range is a reason to measure: airflow and pressure drop before and after any intervention, so it can be said what the system recovered and not what a brochure promised. The review of inspection methods by Mashonova et al. (2026) ranks camera inspection and pressure drop measurement among the best rated methods. E-26
Common claims the literature does not support
| Common claim | What the evidence says | Ref. |
|---|---|---|
| “Cleaning ducts improves occupants’ health” | The EPA: it has never been shown to prevent health problems. The Indoor Air review finds insufficient evidence of symptom relief. | E-02 E-01 |
| “Cleaning ducts cuts your bill by X%” | Inadequate evidence; laboratory tests give -5.1% to +45.5% depending on the case. | E-01 E-18 |
| “Dirty ducts cause the dust in the office” | No field study has correlated poor indoor air quality with duct contamination. | E-01 |
| “Ducts must be cleaned every X months” | The EPA recommends cleaning only when necessary, not on a schedule. | E-02 |
| “We apply a disinfectant that kills the microorganisms in the duct” | The EPA states that no chemical biocide is registered for internally insulated systems, and that effectiveness has not been demonstrated. | E-02 |
| “We seal the duct to encapsulate the mold” | The EPA warns that sealants should never be used on wet liner, actively growing mold or debris. | E-02 |
| “We clean the fiberglass and it is as good as new” | The EPA: wet or moldy insulation cannot be cleaned effectively and should be replaced. | E-02 |
| “Duct dust raises fan consumption by 270%” | It comes from a numerical simulation with no field validation. It is not used in this guide. | No reference |

How this evidence is used
If cleaning is not a ritual, the decision rests on criteria and measurements. The indication criteria, inspection methods and method requirements are in when to clean ducts and how it should be done. How the system behaves in Panama’s climate is in indoor air quality and tropical climate, and the maintenance and energy data are in preventive maintenance and energy efficiency.

Frequently asked questions
Does duct cleaning improve health?
The EPA states that duct cleaning has never been shown to prevent health problems, and the Indoor Air review finds insufficient evidence of symptom relief. What has been observed is an association between infrequent cleaning of coils and drain pans and more eye symptoms and headaches among office occupants (EPA BASE study, 97 buildings), an association and not causal proof.
Does cleaning ducts save energy?
It depends on the case and there is no fixed percentage to promise. A full-scale laboratory test measured fan energy changes from -5.1% to +45.5% depending on the system’s condition and its leaks, and an overall review considers the evidence of savings inadequate. That is why airflow and pressure drop should be measured before and after.
Can a cleaning worsen the air?
During the work, yes, if there is no containment. A study in eight homes measured more particles and bioaerosols during cleaning than before or after, and the EPA warns that cleaning without proper procedures can cause indoor air problems.
Then why is cleaning sometimes recommended?
Because there are specific situations where it is indicated: substantial visible mold in sheet-metal ducts, vermin, obstruction by dust and debris, or particles coming out of the registers. Those EPA criteria, and the complementary technical ones, are in when to clean ducts and how it should be done.
What is better than cleaning on a schedule?
Inspect and decide on what is observed. The review of inspection methods by Mashonova et al. (2026) ranks camera inspection and pressure drop measurement among the best rated methods. A camera inspection shows the real condition of the interior.
